Anvils are used to repair items. The common method is two combine two damaged objects to form a new tool. With use of anvil, the item will retain it’s enchantments and may also acquire new ones from the used material. Other than, anvils can also be used to repair items by using the material originally used to make a tool such as Iron Ingot or Gold Ingot. The rule is that a matching item must bee used for item with durability.
Anvils can also be used to rename any object. To rename an object, the name tag must be renamed. If the player renames a weapon, the new name will be shown in he death message once the player kills someone. In Pocket Editions, anvils can also be used to zoom or clone a map. They can also be used to locate a player position on the map.
When anvils fall on any non-solid block, they will destroy it. If the fall on any other material like boats, signs, fences etc., they will drop as themselves. The mob head will become the item if an anvil is dropped on a mob.
Anvils have a 12% chance of being damage upon use. If they fall from a height, they can be damaged. It does not decrease the efficiency of an anvil. Only anvils with same damage level are stackable.
An achievement is made upon naming a Shulker Box with an anvil.
